Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about eFuneral and planning and purchasing a funeral service below. If you don’t find the information you need, don’t hesitate to contact us or your chosen funeral services provider.
What is eFuneral?
What is eFuneral and why should I use it?
eFuneral is an online funeral planning and purchasing tool. We’re not a funeral services provider. eFuneral enables you to make funeral plans and purchases online with the funeral services provider of your choice. If you choose to pre-fund your funeral, we may offer a secure funding vehicle for your prearrangement.
Does eFuneral help with imminent funeral services or just advance planning?
eFuneral's partner providers serve both customers who are planning an imminent service or are making advance plans.
Choosing a Provider
Why are some providers marked as eFuneral Partners?
eFuneral Partner providers have partnered with us to offer direct, online planning and purchase capability. This means you can complete the entire process, including paying for prearrangement, online. In addition, our Partner providers will guarantee the cost of a prearranged and pre-funded funeral purchased through eFuneral.
Is there a benefit to selecting an eFuneral Partner provider?
The biggest benefit is the ability to complete your planning process and payment online.
Prepaying for a Funeral
Do I have to prepay?
Not necessarily. You may simply prepare a plan and select a provider and pass that information along to your loved ones. However, if you choose prepayment as the final step, your loved ones will have clarity about your funeral plans after you pass on and your prearrangement will be funded for the goods and services you select. If you choose to prepay, your funds will be placed in a secure funding vehicle in accordance with the law in your state.
What if I change my mind or need to change providers?
One of the biggest advantages of prepaying through eFuneral is our extensive provider network. If you need to change your selected funeral services provider, send us a note at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will help you find another provider. If you prefunded your prearrangement, you may move your prearrangement to another provider free of charge. Please note, the new provider may not honor the guarantees or prices of the original provider.
If you have prepaid through eFuneral and change your mind altogether, carefully review the documentation associated with the secure funding vehicle as it may permit cancellation for a full refund within a certain time period.
Where does my money go when I prepay for my funeral with eFuneral?
When you prepay for your funeral with a partner provider through eFuneral, your payment is secured through a secure funding vehicle regulated in accordance with the laws of your state.
Are there financial benefits to prepaying for my funeral?
There are. By prepaying for your funeral, you can often benefit from a guaranteed funeral contract.
What is a “guaranteed funeral?”
When a prepaid funeral is "guaranteed," it means that the funeral provider accepts your payment now as payment in full for the goods and services they will provide in the future. This means your loved ones or your estate will not have to pay additional funds for the items under guarantee.
I’ve prepaid for my funeral service. If funeral costs rise before I pass away, will my loved ones have to pay the difference?
That depends. If you preplanned a funeral with a provider who will guarantee the cost then your loved ones won't owe any additional funds for the guaranteed items. If you planned with a funeral provider who doesn't guarantee the cost then your loved ones will need to make up any difference in the actual cost or change the selections to a more affordable option (if changes to your selections are allowed in your state).
If my funeral is guaranteed does that mean my family won't owe anything?
When a funeral is guaranteed, the funeral provider accepts the prepayment as payment in full for the services the funeral provider can control. This includes things like their staff, the use of their facilities, transportation, and any caskets or urns you purchase. Things that aren't guaranteed are things outside of the provider's control like the cost of flowers, purchasing an obituary placed in a newspaper or services provided by the cemetery. When prefunding you can set money aside for these nonguaranteed items to minimize the potential out-of-pocket cost to your loved ones.
