Mike Belsito, Co-Founder of Cleveland, Ohio-based eFuneral, discusses the topic of caskets and coffins. Belsito explains the difference between these types of containers, the history of the terms “casket” and “coffin,” and how individuals may purchase and use these containers.  You can find more information about details related to funeral planning in eFuneral’s resources section.

    Wrong. Coffins are shaped much differently than caskets. Coffins are more European based & caskets US based. Understand the history & give real information.

      Thanks for sharing some feedback! I appreciate your perspective — although, you may be surprised to find out that the term “casket” actually does mean “jewelry box”. By definition, the container to bury somebody is referred to as a “coffin”. As an example, you could reference the definitions from Merriam Webster:
      * Definition for Casket:
      http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/casket
      * Definition for Coffin:
      http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/coffin

      As I mentioned in the video, however (and as you point out), the terminology has changed in the funeral industry, specifically. So by practice, the differences you bring up are great to note. To be fair, I’ll include a link to a video from a funeral industry professional on the differences in terms of shape: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzni3eO7Vw4

      Thanks again for the feedback!
