In Honor of Nelson Mandela
This memorial honors Nelson Mandela, who, over the past 94 years, has been a symbol of hope and freedom.
Nelson Mandela is best known for the 27 years he spent in prison for his activity in the struggle against apartheid and his role as South Africa’s first black president.
But to me, Nelson Mandela represents more than a prisoner turned president. He was a man willing to die for justice and freedom. He had true courage and inspired others to triumph over their own fears. Mandela was an idealist who never wavered from his principals that all people should be treated equally and have the right to have their voices heard in government. He was brilliant at making people believe in his ideals, without compelling them to do so, and knowing when to abandon failed ideas.
If I had to choose just one thing that I will always remember about Nelson Mandela – just one legacy – it would be his smile. With one perfectly easy, confident, and sympathetic grin, Mandela instilled hope and the promise of a better future.
What does Nelson Mandela mean to you? How has he impacted your life?
